VCI Packaging

Also known as: Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor, VCI Film, VPI

VCI packaging releases a vapour that settles on metal surfaces and forms a molecular layer blocking corrosion. Unlike oils or desiccants it protects recessed and enclosed areas the vapour reaches, and needs no cleaning off before use.

Keep every metal surface within 30 cm of a VCI source and allow the vapour a few hours to reach equilibrium before relying on it.

VCI compounds are blended into film, paper or emitters. Inside a reasonably closed pack they volatilise, migrate through the air and adsorb onto every exposed metal surface, forming a layer a few molecules thick that interrupts the electrochemical reaction corrosion depends on.

The advantage over a desiccant is coverage. A desiccant removes moisture from the air in the pack; a VCI protects the metal surface directly, including bores, threads and blind recesses that a coating could never reach and that a desiccant only helps indirectly.

The advantage over rust-preventive oil is handling. Parts come out clean and ready to assemble, with no degreasing step and no disposal of contaminated solvent.

VCI needs a reasonably sealed enclosure to hold vapour concentration, and the chemistry is metal-specific — the wrong formulation can actually attack non-ferrous metals. Always specify what metal is being protected.

VCI Packaging at a glance

Forms Film, paper, emitters, powder, liquid
Mechanism Vapour adsorbs into a molecular protective layer
Typical protection 12–24 months in a sealed pack
Coverage Reaches bores, threads and blind recesses
Cleaning None required before use
Caution Metal-specific chemistry — specify the metal

Common questions

What is the VCI full form?

VCI full form is volatile corrosion inhibitor. VCI packaging releases a vapour that forms a molecular layer on metal surfaces inside a sealed pack, stopping rust without oil or grease. It is supplied as film, bags, paper and emitters, and is dosed to the enclosed volume and the transit time.

What is the difference between VCI and a desiccant?

A desiccant absorbs moisture from the air inside the pack. VCI forms a protective molecular layer directly on the metal surface. VCI reaches recesses a desiccant only helps indirectly, and the two are often used together on high-value parts.

How long does VCI packaging protect metal parts?

Typically 12–24 months in a properly sealed pack. Protection stops once the pack is opened and the vapour disperses, so the pack must stay closed until the parts are used.
