Partition / Divider

Also known as: Cell Divider, Corrugated Partition, Box Partition Insert, Cell Pack, Separator

A partition (divider) is a set of interlocking corrugated or paperboard strips slotted together to split a carton into cells, so bottles, jars, tiles or machined parts cannot touch each other. Cell counts follow the carton footprint — 6, 12 and 24 cells are standard — and partition height is normally 5–10 mm below the product height.

A partition is made from strips of 3-ply B or E flute board, or 400–600 GSM chipboard, each slotted halfway across at the cell pitch so the lengthwise and crosswise strips interlock into a grid. A 3 × 4 grid for a 12-bottle case uses two long strips and three short ones; in general (rows − 1) + (columns − 1) strips. Partitions are supplied flat for hand assembly or pre-assembled on a partition machine, and belong to the FEFCO 09-series of interior fitments — 0933 is the common slotted partition.

Partitions do two jobs. The obvious one is separation: glass bottles, ceramic mugs, plated brass fittings and small castings rub and chip against each other over 1,000 km of road vibration unless something sits between them. The less obvious one is load bearing. Partition strips standing on the base and touching the lid act as internal columns, so a partitioned 12-bottle case has noticeably higher compression strength than the empty carton — one reason bottle cases stack well with 3-ply board.

Cell size is the product footprint plus 2–4 mm clearance per side so items drop in freely but cannot rattle; for a 65 mm diameter bottle a 70 mm cell is typical. Strip height is usually the product height less 5–10 mm so the lid closes on the product, not the partition, and the internal box dimensions must include the board thickness of every strip — a 4-column grid on 3 mm B flute adds 9 mm to the length. Cell counts of 6, 12 and 24 dominate because they divide the standard 400 × 300 mm and 600 × 400 mm carton footprints cleanly.

Corrugated partitions have limits. They give separation but only light cushioning, so heavy machined parts crush the slots, glazed ceramics still chip at the base, and polished surfaces pick up abrasion from the board edge. In those cases the options are an EPE foam partition or die-cut tray, which is non-abrasive and survives repeated use; a corrugated partition combined with a 1–2 mm EPE interleaf or wrap; or a moulded pulp tray. For returnable loops between a Rajkot machine shop and a Pune OEM, EPE partitions outlast board by many trips.

To order a partition, give the internal carton dimensions, the item dimensions and weight, the cell count and layout, the board or foam material, and whether it should arrive flat or assembled. Typical Indian users are Morbi ceramic and sanitaryware makers, Jamnagar brass exporters, glass bottlers and Rajkot bearing and pump manufacturers packing 12–24 identical parts per case. We supply corrugated partitions with our cartons and cut EPE foam partitions where cushioning or reuse is required.

Common questions

What is a partition in a corrugated box?

A partition is an insert of slotted strips that interlock to divide the box into cells, one item per cell, so contents cannot touch. It is made from 3-ply corrugated board or chipboard, supplied flat or assembled, and is the standard insert for bottles, jars, mugs and small identical parts.

How do I size a partition for bottles?

Add 2–4 mm per side to the bottle diameter for the cell, set the strip height 5–10 mm below the bottle height, and count the strips as (rows − 1) + (columns − 1). Then add the board thickness of every strip to the internal carton dimensions, or the assembled partition will not fit.

Corrugated partition or foam partition — which is better?

Corrugated is cheaper and adds stacking strength, so it suits bottles, jars and light parts on one-way trips. EPE foam is non-abrasive, cushions impact and survives repeated use, so it suits heavy machined parts, glazed ceramics, plated hardware and returnable loops. Many packs combine a corrugated grid with an EPE interleaf.

Does a partition improve box stacking strength?

Yes, when the strips stand on the base and reach the lid. They behave as internal columns and share the vertical load with the box walls, which is why partitioned bottle cases stack far better than the empty carton would suggest. A partition cut well short of the lid adds separation but no stacking strength.
