A paper edge protector, also called an angle board, edge board or paper corner protector, is a multi-ply laminated kraft profile formed into an L-section and placed on the edges of a pallet load. Under strapping and stretch film it spreads the concentrated force along the whole edge instead of letting it crush one carton corner, and at the four vertical corners it acts as a column that adds measurable compression strength to the stack. The range runs from 35 × 35 mm legs at 2 mm wall for light carton pallets to 100 × 100 mm legs at 10 mm wall for heavy tile, pipe and machinery loads. Edge protector size is written as leg × leg × wall thickness × length, for example 50 × 50 × 4 × 1200 mm. Leg and wall set the stiffness of the column; length is cut to the pallet load height or the carton edge it covers. The combinations we supply and the loads they suit:

Horizontal boards along the top edges of a pallet take the strap line; vertical boards at the four corners take the stacking load. Order lengths to the load height for vertical corners and to the pallet footprint, usually 1200 or 1000 mm, for horizontal boards. See pallet sizes for the Indian footprints.

Start from the strap. Under a hand-tensioned 12 mm PP strap on 3-ply cartons, a 2 to 3 mm board is enough to stop the flute crushing at the corners. Under 16 mm PET strap tensioned with a friction-weld tool on tile or brick pallets, move to 4 to 5 mm with 50 mm legs. Then the stack. If pallets will be double-stacked in a 40 ft container or racked in a warehouse, the vertical corner boards carry part of the load and a thicker wall pays for itself; 5 to 6 mm at 60 mm legs is the usual step up. On tall or heavy palletised loads, angle boards are often the cheapest single improvement available, a small material cost that meaningfully reduces stack collapse and edge crushing in containers.

Paper or foam. A paper angle board protects the pallet load and adds column strength. Where the product itself has a finished edge, such as an appliance, a door, a glass panel or a sanitaryware piece, an EPE foam buffer or profile on the product cushions impact as well as spreading load, and the paper board goes on the pallet outside it. The two do different jobs and heavy export loads often carry both.

Angle boards are kitted with the strap, seals, stretch film and corner blocks they work with. A typical pallet kit is four vertical corner boards cut to load height, four horizontal boards cut to the pallet footprint, two PET straps each way and 23 micron stretch film through the deck. Where the load goes into a honeycomb or corrugated crate the board is specified with the honeycomb paper board panels so the whole pack stays paper-only and ISPM-15 free.

Angle boards are quoted per piece within one working day; there is no fixed price list. The paper angle board price moves on leg size, wall thickness, cut length, printing or wax treatment, the number of pieces per dispatch and the freight lane. A 100 × 100 × 10 mm board carries many times the kraft of a 35 × 35 × 2 mm board of the same length, so the leg and wall decision is the price decision; choose the board the strap and stack need rather than defaulting to the heaviest.

Compare quotes on leg, wall and length together; a board with fewer plies at the same nominal wall is a softer column at a lower price per piece and shows in crushed corners after the first container. Strap, seals, stretch film and corner blocks are quoted on the same sheet so the pallet kit is one line.

Stock leg and wall sizes are quoted at any sensible quantity and cut to length before dispatch; a single bundle for a trial pallet is a normal order.
