Also known as: Cross-Linked Polyethylene Foam, XLPE, Cross-link foam
XLPE foam is cross-linked polyethylene foam with a much finer, more uniform cell structure than standard EPE. It is firmer, has a smooth skin and a premium appearance, and is specified where both high protection and a high-quality finish are required.
Cross-linking creates chemical bonds between polyethylene chains, producing a tighter and more regular cell structure than non-cross-linked EPE. The result is a foam that is firmer, stronger for its density and noticeably smoother on the surface.
Visually XLPE looks like a solid, velvety material rather than an obviously bubbly foam, which is why it appears in automotive interior packaging, medical device trays and premium consumer electronics inserts.
It also thermoforms and laminates well, holding crisp detail in moulded cavities. Where EPE would look coarse at a cut edge, XLPE stays clean, so it suits shallow, precise cavities that are visible on opening.
XLPE costs more than EPE and is generally reserved for the contact layer or for applications where appearance is part of the specification.
XLPE Foam at a glance
| Cell structure | Closed-cell, cross-linked, very fine |
|---|---|
| Typical density | 25–200 kg/m³ |
| Surface | Smooth skin, premium appearance |
| Strength | Higher tensile and tear strength than EPE at equal density |
| Typical uses | Automotive interiors, medical trays, premium electronics |
Common questions
What is the difference between XLPE and EPE foam?
Both are polyethylene foams, but XLPE is chemically cross-linked, giving a finer, more uniform cell structure, a smoother skin and higher strength at the same density. EPE is cheaper and adequate for most industrial cushioning; XLPE is chosen when finish and precision matter.
