Honeycomb board is a paper panel with a hexagonal-cell core between two liners. The geometry gives very high compression strength for its weight, making it a recyclable replacement for plywood in export pallets, crates and edge protection.
The hexagonal cell is the most material-efficient way to resist compression, which is why it appears in aircraft floors as well as packaging. Loaded perpendicular to the cells, a paper honeycomb panel carries loads far beyond what its weight suggests.
For export packaging its value is regulatory as much as structural. Paper honeycomb is not wood, so it falls entirely outside ISPM-15 — no fumigation, no heat treatment, no stamped certification, no delays at port.
It is used for pallet decks and blocks, crate walls, heavy edge protectors and layer pads under stacked goods. Compared with plywood it is much lighter, which reduces chargeable freight weight on every consignment.
The limitation is moisture. Paper honeycomb loses strength when wet, so for humid routes or sea freight it must be either coated or protected inside a sealed pack.

Can honeycomb board replace plywood in export crates?
For many loads, yes. It is far lighter, fully recyclable, and being paper it is exempt from ISPM-15 fumigation entirely. The constraint is moisture — humid or sea routes need a coated grade or a sealed outer pack.
Is honeycomb board strong enough for pallets?
Yes, for a wide range of loads. Honeycomb pallets are used widely in export because the ISPM-15 exemption and lower freight weight often outweigh the higher unit cost.
